The VertiGIS companies have been developing a joint utility solution since summer 2019. Based on ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise and the new Utility Network from Esri our new product – VertiGIS Utilities – is being created.
A first milestone was reached with the provision of a “minimum viable product (MVP)” for the Belgian energy supplier Fluvius. The solution continuously receives new functions. Work is done according to the agile Scrum method in cross-company and cross-branch teams.
New utility solution scores with many functionalities
Fluvius manages electricity, natural gas, heating, sewerage, telecom and/or cable TV network for eleven network operators. These network operators are active in all 300 Flemish municipalities.
In the MVP, VertiGIS has extended the basic functionality of Esri and thus provides optimal support in the collection, tracking or planning of assets. The data entry functions are integrated in the standard Esri data entry functions. For example, context-specific attribute masks, dimensioning and construction tools, object and address search and reporting are provided as extensions. User-friendly interfaces and automated processes in the background greatly simplify the handling of work versions (work packages). Access to a complex project infrastructure is made easier via a project start page.
Within the framework of a project, the gas data from Fluvius were transferred into the structure of the utility network based on the UPDM data model from Esri. Based on this data structure, configurations of the attribute masks, reporting and network tracing were carried out for the project. VertiGIS Utilities solutions are independent of the selected Utility Network data model. Thus, the developed functionalities can be used and tested directly. In the coming weeks, the customer will check the work processes for documentation and planning on a test installation. Based on the feedback, the product’s functionalities are further optimized and validated in a practice-oriented manner. Thus VertiGIS Utilities supports and accompanies work processes optimally and efficiently.
By the end of 2020, a further milestone in development is to be reached with the release of the first version. Then customers can apply the basic functionality to their own VertiGIS data models and configure attribute masks. The first out-of-the-box solutions of VertiGIS for water and gas on the Utility Network should be available in 2021. The new standard VertiGIS Utility Network data models will be made available openly.
