Usage of Global IDs in GEONIS 5.4.

09.09.2016

The latest release of the GEONIS product family is just about ready. Here we report the usage of Global IDs in GEONIS 5.4.

Global IDs: Meaning and Possibilities

A unique identifier is necessary to find the right data or feature in a steadily-growing quantity of data. To accomplish this, GEONIS solutions now use worldwide recognized GUID technology (Globally Unique ID).

1. Is GUID the same as GlobalID?

A GUID – Globally Unique Identifier – is just that: a globally unique identification formed from 32 alphanumeric characters, for example {9E0682F9-36F6-490C-8CDE-57E3E9BCCF33}. The enormous number of possible combinations secures its uniqueness. GlobalID is the term used by Esri for this unique number.

2. Possible Uses

Integration with external systems

The geographical position and other important attributes of utility network objects are managed in GIS. But the consumption data about the end-customer may be found in a customer relationship management (CRM) system. With an integration between the GIS service connection point and the end customer record in CRM it becomes possible to see consumption-over-time information graphically depicted on the map. This visual representation might enable faster analysis or development of contingency plans in case of a service problem.
The unique nature of an object with the GlobalID makes it possible to absolutely identify this record between the two databases, thus allowing this GUID to act as the key in any kind of data-exchange between these systems. GEONIS models are ready for ArcGIS Pro. From the ArcGIS product family both ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro can be used as a desktop workstation. Esri is developing the new Utility Information Model (UIM) as the underlying mechanism for working with utility supply networks in ArcGIS Pro. This new model will also use GlobalIDs.

Database replication

The Esri GlobalID is required in order to use Esri’s database replication mechanism. The replication enables editing of objects in disparate databases, which can then be synchronized at any time.

Off-line data editing with GEONIS gear

A user should be able to edit data in the field offline, and later, when there is a network connection, synchronize the changes with the main repository. With GEONIS gear a replicated SDE Version is created and copied locally to the device. Because of GlobalIDs this data can be re-integrated with the ArcGIS Service at any time.

Summary

  • The GlobalID from Esri corresponds to the worldwide GUID standard.
  • The GlobalID is required in order to use Esri’s database replication mechanism
  • With the implementation of GlobalID in the standard solutions and products from Geocom new possibilities are opened up to support future-orientated workflows.
  • Whether a GlobalID or another key field should be used for communication with 3rd-party applications must be decided individually, based on the requirements of each integration and workflow
