Drone2Map takes GEONIS Blaeu to new heights

The use of drones in combination with Drone2Map for ArcGIS has proven to be a great way to improve the productivity in data capture and processing products that the Waterschappen can easily adapt to improve the efficiency in their workflows.

In April 2016, Esri Netherlands, together with MUG Engineering Bureau, trialed a new way of collecting data using mini drones and Esri’s Drone2Map for ArcGIS.

The project took place at the Waterschap (Water Board) “Drents en Overijsselse Delta” and had a clearly defined goal: to demonstrate the possibilities for data collection using mini drones, within the existing legislation around their usage for commercial purposes. The project should also show the possibilities for post-processing and analyses of the drone-captured data.

After a flight plan was defined, the drone was launched and captured 40 images within a five-minute flight. Immediately after landing the imagery was loaded and processed by Drone2Map, including accurately stitching together the overlapping images. Within a mere one hour after landing, the captured and post-processed data was available for use in GEONIS Blaeu.

The rather simple dike measurements are complemented with Drone2map data.

This platform-compatible solution goes by the credo of providing the right information and workflow to the right employee, at the right time.

One specific workflow in GEONIS Blaeu is the creation of cross sectional profiles of waterways. Using the data products from drones and Drone2Map, the as-is profiles can be created and then compared with the original canalization designs.
